Pastor's weekly message

Dear Friends in Christ,

In our gospel lesson for this coming Sunday, Matthew narrates one of Jesus' controversial parables, in which Jesus says the reign of God is like workers who get paid the same no matter when they start working.  By human standards, this doesn't seem fair.  We tend to see things in a narrow, self-centered way.  Thankfully, our God does not see as we see:  God's vision is of a world where all are reconciled with God and with each other.  God's grace and mercy are without limit and without end, and so it's never too late to accept God's open invitation to enter into God's vineyard and begin the work of the kingdom.  Someone who turns to God in the last minutes of life will receive the same reward as a lifelong Christian.  Now THAT'S radical generosity!!!

Prayer of the Day

Almighty and eternal God, you show perpetual loving kindness to us your servants.  Because we cannot rely on our own abilities, grant us your merciful judgment, and train us to embody the generosity of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen

Pastor's Weekly Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

In the lesson from Romans that is appointed for this coming Sunday, Paul questions why we judge one another, since we all stand before the judgment of God.  Yet we do sin against one another, and Jesus' challenge that we forgive seventy-seven times, reveals God's boundless mercy.  As we celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Baptism for Holly Rowyn Haydamack this Sunday, we are called to remember our own baptism and the covenant God made with us:  We are to go out into the world to be signs of God's reconciling love.

Prayer of the Day

O Lord God, merciful judge, you are the inexhaustible fountain of forgiveness.  Replace our hearts of stone with hearts that love and adore you, that we may delight in doing your will, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen

Town Hall Meeting this Sunday

Dear Friends in Christ,

As most of you are aware, this coming Sunday the people of Shepherd of the Valley will gather for a Town Hall meeting.  Your Call Committee and Council leadership have structured this to be a time of caring and sharing:  With love and concern for ALL our sisters and brothers, we will share and receive information related to the congregation's call process.  There will be NO VOTING at this meeting; it is purely informational.  I strongly urge all of you to support your leadership in prayer and to attend the Town Hall meeting so that everyone receives the same information.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Michelle

Pastor's Weekly Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

Conflict is a part of relationships and life in community.  How we respond to it is key.  Many people in our society try to avoid conflict, or else they dismiss the arguments of anyone who disagrees with them.  In the church we are called to treat each other according to a higher standard:  Relationships are valued so highly in the Christian community that being reconciled always takes precedence over being right.  In our gospel lesson for this coming Sunday, Jesus offers some concrete advice on how to address the conflicts that will inevitably surface in the church (Matthew 18:15-20).  In a similar vein, the apostle Paul reminds us that love is the fulfillment of God's law (Romans 13:8-14).  As we worship together this Sunday, we gather in the name of Christ, assured that he is present among us with his gifts of peace and reconciliation.

Prayer of the Day

O Lord God, enliven and preserve your church with your perpetual mercy.  Without your help, we mortals will fail; remove far from us everything that is harmful, and lead us toward all that gives life and salvation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord; Amen
