Commitment Sunday

Hello, all,

We hope you received your 2009 SOV financial pledge forms, volunteer handbooks, and volunteer sign-up sheets in the mail or picked them up last Sunday.  Please remember to bring the forms and sign-up sheets to church this Sunday, November 2.  We'll have some extra forms in case you forget yours or didn't get one in the mail.  Your financial pledge will be used in the drafting of SOV's 2009 budget, so it's very important that we get as many responses as possible.

Thank you again for your commitment to SOV and for letting your light shine!

Commitment

Luke 6:37-38
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: [38] Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Recognize to whom you owe the fact that you exist, that you breathe, that you understand, that you are wise, and, above all, that you know God and hope for the kingdom of heaven. You have been made a son of God, co-heir with Christ. Where did you get all this, and from whom?.... What benefactor has enabled you to look out upon the beauty of the sky, the sun in its course, the circle of the moon, the countless number of stars, with the harmony and order that are theirs, like the music of a harp? Who has blessed you with rain, with the art of husbandry, with different kinds of food, with the arts, with houses, with laws, with states, with a life of humanity and culture, with friendship and the easy familiarity of kinship? ... Is it not God who asks you now in your turn to show yourself generous ... Because we have received from him so many wonderful gifts, will we not be ashamed to refuse him this one thing only, our generosity?

Spiritual Gifts Assessment

Dear SOV Church Family,

It's been brought to my attention that the link to the spiritual gifts inventory, which was printed in yesterday's bulletin, doesn't work.  (I tried to connect and confirmed that it doesn't work.)  However, I did some research and found that the following link does work:  http://archive.elca.org/evangelism/assessments/spiritgifts.html

Blessings,

Pastor Michelle

Pastor's Weekly Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

Our God is a God of surprises:  God sees potential where we see worthlessness.  When things seem grim and the forces opposed to life seem to be winning the day, God finds a way to bring hope out of despair.  Sometimes God even uses those who don't know God to accomplish God's purposes.  We find an example of this in the first reading appointed for this coming Sunday, in which God uses the Gentile ruler Cyrus to accomplish the divine purpose of ending Israel's exile.  In our gospel lesson, we observe that when the religious authorities try to trip Jesus up, God gives him words of wisdom that stop them in their tracks:  "Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's and to God the things that are God's."  As we gather for worship, we are reminded that our ultimate allegiance is to God rather than to any earthly authority.  Created in the image of God, we offer our entire selves in the service of God and for the sake of the world.

Prayer of the Day

Sovereign God, raise your throne in our hearts.  Created by you, let us live in your image; created for you, let us act for your glory; redeemed by you, let us give you what is yours, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord; Amen

Pastor's weekly message

Dear Friends in Christ,

In our gospel lesson for this coming Sunday (Matthew 21:33-46), Jesus tells a parable of the vineyard, an image of Israel, the prophets' mission, and Christ's death.  For Christians, the vineyard also speaks of God's love poured out in the blood of Christ, given to us for the forgiveness of sin.  Grafted onto Christ the vine at baptism, we are nourished with wine and bread, that we may share Christ's sufferings and know the power of his resurrection.  In the lesson appointed from Philippians (Philippians 3:4b-14), Paul declares that it is the power of Christ's resurrection that motivates him to press on toward the ultimate goal:  eternal life with Christ.

 Prayer of the Day

Beloved God, from you come all things that are good.  Lead us by the inspiration of your Spirit to know those things that are right, and by your merciful guidance, help us to do them, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen
