Pastor's Weekly Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

In the Old Testament lesson for this coming Sunday (Deuteronomy 18:15-20), God promises to raise up a prophet like Moses, who will speak for God.  Similarly, in our gospel lesson (Mark 1:21-28) we read of people sensing God's authority in Jesus' words and actions.  But you and I know that God's authority is not confined to the pages of the Bible, for we encounter that authority whenever we gather for worship in Word and Sacrament.  God's Word trumps any lesser spirit that would claim power over us, freeing us to follow Jesus.

Prayer of the Day

Compassionate God, you gather the whole universe into your radiant presence and continually reveal your Son as our Savior.  Bring wholeness to all that is broken and speak truth to us in our confusion, that all creation will see and know your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen

Marriage announcement

Yesterday we received in the church office a very nice announcement of the marriage of Megan June Rizer and Eric Gene Myers, who were married on December 31st.  Megan also sent a beautiful photo of the happy couple, which I will post on the bulletin board.  She asked us to share the happy news with all of you.

Lord, bless Megan and Eric, that they may find delight in each other and grow in holy love until their life's end.  Amen

Blessings,

Pastor's Weekly Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

Isn't it wonderful to see the light of the sun this week?!  As we inch our way toward spring and the days grow just a little bit longer, our spirits are lifted.  Yet even better than seeing the light of the sun is seeing the Light of the Son!  We are now in the season of the church year known as "Epiphany," a word that we often define as meaning "revelation" or "insight."  Literally, however, "epiphany" means the equivalent of "shining appearance."  During the season of Epiphany, our Scripture lessons tell us of the beginning of Jesus' earthly ministry and they relay to us the wonderful stories of how the Light of Christ spread throughout the world.  Isn't it wonderful to know that the Light of the Son is always there for us—even on the coldest days of the year and on the darkest days of our lives?!

Our Scripture lessons for this coming Sunday include a reading from I Samuel (3:1-20) and the gospel reading from John (I:43-51).  These lessons remind us that all the baptized have a calling in God's world.  It doesn't matter how young or how old we are.  It doesn't matter where we come from.  What matters is where we are going, or better:  to Whom we are going.  As the disciples said when Jesus asked whether they wanted to go away, "Lord, to Whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life."

Prayer of the Day

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, most merciful redeemer, for the countless blessings and benefits you give.  May we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day praising you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Pastor's Weekly Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

Today marks the festival of the Epiphany, the day we listen to the story of the three wise men who followed the light of a most unusual star to a stable where they found a most unusual baby, Jesus, the Son of God and Savior of the world.  During the church season of Epiphany, which lasts seven weeks, we will celebrate the spreading of Christ's light to the whole world.  It is fitting that this season of enlightenment coincides with the increasing amount of light in our days as we move toward springtime!

This coming Sunday, the Church remembers the Baptism of Our Lord.  It will be an extra special day here at Shepherd of the Valley, as we also celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Baptism for Emery May Garcia at the 11 o'clock service.  Baptisms are an occasion for all of us to recall and reclaim our own baptism.  The Old Testament lesson appointed for this Sunday reminds us that our re-creation in baptism is an image of the Genesis creation, where the Spirit/wind moved over the waters (Genesis 1:1-5).  Our lesson from Mark's gospel (Mark 1:4-11) makes it clear that it is the Spirit's movement that distinguishes Jesus' baptism from John's.  The Spirit has come upon us as it did upon Jesus, calling us God's beloved children and sending us out on Jesus' mission to re-create the world in the image of God's vision of justice and peace.

Prayer of the Day

Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters.  Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Thank you so much to everyone at Shepherd of the Valley for all your thoughtful Christmas gifts and your warm wishes!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Michelle
