Pastor's Weekly Message

"For everything there is a season..." Ecclesiastes 3:1
So begins a pretty well known piece of scripture, a favorite of mine that speaks to the whole of life it seems.  But about those seasons.  I know it is still the end of August but the coming of Labor Day weekend, the beginning of school next week (not to mention the cool nights and all those spider webs in the morning), mean that fall is nearly upon us.  The clincher for me is a particular sound of this past week or so, with the windows open in the evening, I can hear the Hillsboro High School band practicing in preparation for football season.

Sounds, sights, smells, the richness of the seasons.  The richness of life itself.  Take a moment to take it in.

In praise of the Creator,
Pastor Randy

Lord, we thank you for the gift of time and space, for the vastness of creation and the richness of our lives.  Help us to use well the time that we are given.  Amen.

Pastor's Weekly Message

"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 117:24

Words that we use sometimes on Sunday mornings at the beginning of worship. They may not always be offered with the same amount of conviction.  It seems easier to proclaim when the sun greets me in the morning and looking out over the deck I can see some spectacular 9 feet tall sunflowers.  They are witnesses to what "the Lord has made" and by their sheer beauty, even though silent, shout "rejoice and be glad in it".

May such blessedness be recalled when the beauty is not so obviously present.  The realization that every day is a gift of God.  Please help and guide me Lord.

In the peace and power of the Creator,
Pastor Randy

"Open our hearts to the strengthening presence of all who love us, in the life and beyond.  Enter into our hearts that we might be moved to walk with Jesus wherever we are led.  It is in his name that we pray.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"....Let there be lights ... and let them be for signs and for seasons ..." Genesis 1:14

A couple of 100 degree days not with standing, fact is I have noticed the yellowing leaves high in the trees in the gully out back.  Some of those same leaves have drifted silently to the yard far below.  Reminders of the season change even in the middle of August.

But the biggest give away is the diminishing light.  Less time to sit out back and read.  The bats arriving earlier.  Still plenty in the way of reminders of life's movement though, and not in a sorrowful way, but in a sense of beauty.  Like tonight, ready to head in, stooping to pick up a green leaf from the deck, but the leaf moved.  It was a tree frog, and in looking up at the flower pot just a foot away sat another frog, deep olive in color.  Plenty of life afoot without a doubt.  Thanks for the surprises Lord.

Again, in praise of the Creator,
Pastor Randy

"Your light is the only light we need as we travel through life's mystery. Your word that still small voice we hear that leads us to the place where we should be.  Your fellowship the warmth we crave to help us on the way. Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created."  Psalm 148:5

The psalmist speaks yet again about all of creation, even the seeming inanimate objects, praising the Creator.  Leave me thinking much the same again as well.  So much beauty to take in, and so many reasons to give thanks, just in views from the yard.

The moon passing by, with so many clear nights recently, bathing the back yard in a delicate, peaceful, silver light.  Watching the tomatoes  and peppers continue to flower and bear fruit.  Discovering more zucchini and cucumber hiding under broad leaves.  The sun flowers now require a craned neck to see their tops.  The birds flitting about, a bright green tree frog discovered in a flower pot. And more.

Thanks for the gifts Lord.  They do sing your praise.

Blessed by the Creator,
Pastor Randy

Lord, your faithfulness, kindness and mercy are unfailing and without end.  May that faithfulness, kindness and mercy spill out from our lives to each person that we encounter this week.  May lives be changed as the gospel is lived out of our words and actions.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar and that fills it;" Psalm 96:11

Song writer Bruce Cockburn adds somewhat to the picture with a starker, more modern reality, "...the waves roar on the beach like a squadron of F 16's."  Either way, the picture is certain and we can attest to it, the sea roars as the waves crash on the beach.  It is a constant and there was a blessed chance to take it in for a few days last week.

There was even a chance to take in some of the "all that fills it" while climbing on some rocks when the tide was out.  Varieties of fish blending in with rocks until they darted about.  Hermit crabs moving with surprising quickness.  Or looking up and seeing a row of pelicans skimming just above the waves themselves.  Such beauty.

It can almost go unnoticed, the roar becoming mere background noise, but in the end I am amazed that in such awesome power there is a calming comfort spoken to us by creator of all things.

Thanks for the gifts Lord.
Pastor Randy
