Pastor's Weekly Message

"The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever."  Isiah 40:9a

It may seem a bit early to consider such words, especially since we are still in May and the rains have returned.  The grass at our house is doing anything but withering.  But at least a part of the thought of this verse came to mind when looking out the front windows of the church building and seeing a blanket of pink underneath the rhododendrons there.  It is still a rather lovely sight, but soon that blanket will not longer be pink.

So there is a reminder that the flowers fade indeed.  Their beauty is fleeting, and if we are to enjoy that beauty we need to pay attention when we have a chance.  I didn't take the time with some of our roses and the heavy rains took care of them in short order.  I need to learn the lesson over and over.

But thank goodness for the promise that comes in that verse as well.  The word of God knows no such limitations, but sometimes because of that we may be even less likely to pay attention.  It is always there.  May we take a moment, even just a moment, to take it in as well.

In thanks to the Creator,
Pastor Randy

"How difficult it is for us to be in the present moment.  Conversations from the past replay in our minds.  Tasks that await us clamor for our attention.  Plans for the day ahead invite out consideration.  Help us to quiet our chattering minds and be present in this moment.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"...for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous."  Matthew 5:45

Seeing pictures of, and hearing stories from the latest tragedy.  There are some who immediately desire to place blame, see some sense of judgment.  There is the want to make sense of such things, but there is no sense here, just incredible sorrow and gaping wounds.  (Even if it were possible, finding a reason why would not change the reality.)

Much more could be said about that, but what stands out for me at this moment is a matter of perspective.  I heard it from folks standing in the midst of rubble. "This just stuff", they said, as they basked in the presence of loved ones still alive.

It is a matter of perspective that we learn again and again.  Sometimes we do not learn very well.  When we are bugged by stuff that seems so important at the moment.  When we allow our lives to be ruled by worries that amount to little.  It is a matter of regaining perspective and giving thanks for the real gifts we have been given.

In the peace and power of the Christ,
Pastor Randy

"Interrupt us O God, with your presence.  Intrude upon our preoccupation, our restlessness, our discontent and our boredom.  Help us to center our hearts and minds on the gifts we have received.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"The blessings of the Lord makes rich, and toil adds nothing to it."  Proverbs 10:22

There are so many blessings that are simply gifts of grace.  Have received many such blessings in recent days, and working at them too hard might have only gotten in the way.

The roses have suddenly popped open in bunches of yellow, lavender, white and pink, some of them with rich scents. (There was only a relatively small amount of tending on my part.) The finches flit in and out in frenetic bunches, rich in color and song.  There is huge rhododendron at the end of the house blooming now, still more iris, and other plants growing wildly.

Just a short walk down the road , in the park, there are many more rhododendron and azaleas of many hues, plus ducks, heron, fish, frogs, and nutria (alright not everything is beautiful).

Such things make me feel rich indeed.  I know this is just more of the same, but I would be all the poorer without these blessed moments.  Thanks for the riches Lord.

God's peace,
Pastor Randy

Pastor's Weekly Message

"....child shall play over the hole of the asp...."  Isaiah 11:8a

Those words are part of the prophet's description of the world at the time of ultimate peace.  (The beginning of the chapter gets used at the time of Advent and as an explanation of the Jesse tree.) There is also the "wolf with the lamb, the leopard and the kid, the calf and the lion, and a little child shall lead them."  And in it all no one gets hurt.

What a grand sweet picture.  There is play right at the center of it.  This came to mind for me when thinking of Sunday afternoon.  My littlest grand daughter Daphne, and I, played in the back yard.  It was not a long time, and was not grand stuff, but the playing part was the key, just that.

May we all have a chance to just play, releasing the child in us for a bit, and find a little bit of peace in the mix.

In Christ,
Pastor Randy

O God, what joy that we can be people of hope.  We long for your beauty, your redemption of this life, for eternity with You. They are gifts beyond measure stirring longing for more into our souls.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

".... and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky."   Genesis 1:20

Okay this isn't so much about big flocks of geese and ducks that sometimes dominate the sky, or the osprey and vultures that float seemingly effortlessly high above and slowly drift from sight.

This is about the birds that flit about, moving in short bursts.  Thinking of the mottled robin that is back again, and several compatriots as well.  Always getting a kick out of the way they turn their heads, as if listening intently, before snatching a worm from the earth.  The sometimes frenetic behavior of the finches, some a bright yellow, chasing each other from a feeding perch, from a spot on the bird bath, as if to say, "I don't really want it, but you can't have it."  The show goes on and on.

Thanks for the gift Lord.

Still in praise of the Creator,
Pastor Randy

"Holy Spirit, we live with noise, distraction, clatter and constant commotion.  Help us to remove all that to hear only you.  We need you to lead us on a path to clarity, hope and life.  Help us to clear our minds and open our hearts until all that we hear is you.  Guide us.  Amen."
