Town Hall Meeting

The church council would like to invite everyone to an ice cream social and Town Hall this coming Sunday, October 6, at 6 PM. Everything will be provided, so all you need to do is show up.

The goal of this time together is to get feedback from the congregation, then spend some time as a council combining the feedback with our strategic plan to map out the near future. We want to move forward with congregational feedback.

In preparation for the meeting, we would like everyone to think about the following this week:

1. What attracted you to SOV? Maybe the location, friends already attending, the church's style/format, etc?

2. What are the things that you like about SOV? Programs, services, people, etc?

3. What are your hopes and dreams for SOV? Mostly short term (within 1 year), but we can take note of long term as well.

If you are not able to attend, we still want your feedback. You can send your feedback to Terry, or you can leave written/printed feedback with Tammy in the church office.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Blessings,

Terry Wagemann

Pastor's Weekly Message

"...he leads me beside still waters..."

It is that picture that is in my mind when I think of this past Sunday and the baptism of William.  It was a lovely and peaceful time.  When the water first hit his head he was a bit startled, but the second and third time he was completely calm, and when his mom turned him around and he saw the water below him he looked like he was ready to jump right in.  It was a blessed time, topped off by some grins from William as we walked around the sanctuary together.

Certainly sometimes the waters are anything but still.  Reminded of that again yesterday when the rain poured down and made it hard to hear one another speak at a meeting inside of our SOV building.  Even thinking of more powerful images from Colorado and recent floods there.  The power of rushing water is an awesome force.  But the words of the psalmist depict a completely different scene.

I hope that William has many chances to hear about how excellent the still waters of his baptism were.  I pray that he, that we all, may know the peacefulness of some still waters.  No doubt life will provide enough turbulent waters.

May we know of your gentle presence Lord.

In Christ,
Pastor Randy

"O God, we acknowledge your presence among us.  We know that you understand the language of our hearts, and the accents of our souls.  Hear our cry, and please attend to our needs and accept our sometimes halting worship of you.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Messsage

"The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it ..."  Psalm 24:1a

And there sure is a lot in it. Just thinking of some of things I have been able to take in the last few days. Watching the finches at the feeder, 8 or more at a time. They are just a kick to watch. Plus many other birds helping them out, like the towhee, scrub jay, dove and squirrel cleaning up on the ground. Watching huge numbers of crows fly by the house on their way to, I don't know, (but that did cause me to find out again what a flock of crows is officially called, and that is a "murder" of crows).

The creek out back has suddenly come to life again with our recent rains. The sound it makes can be both startling and soothing, but mostly peaceful. The chorus of crickets continues nightly. Got to spend time with some of our KOK kids in chapel, to see their excitement, to sing with them, and make up new verses to "He's Got the Whole World".

Thinking of the thunder and lightning during worship last Sunday and the murmur it brought to those of us gathered. Awe at the power that never goes away no matter how old we become. Yet another sun flower crashed to the ground, taken down by the rain and its own spectacular bloom. Tasted a fresh peach, smelled still blooming roses, stood in the moon light glowing in the back yard, and on and on ......

This can be a pretty amazing place that we call home, may we see the presence of the Lord in it.

Still in praise of the Creator,
Pastor Randy

"Father, we know that you hear us and, more than that, you respond to our cries.  Please bring peace where there is anxiety, hope where there is despair, mercy where there is failure.  We cry out to you because we know you are near.  It is with hope and assurance that we pray to you.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"I thank my God every time I remember you,..."    Philippians 1:3

Thinking of this last Sunday and Rally Day, and with that in mind I want to offer thanks.  It is always dangerous to name names at the risk of leaving someone out, or not seeming appreciative, but I need to take that chance.

Thanks to Kevin for leading in the pancake and balloon department, especially for doing so without injury.  Thanks to Carla (and Chris) for the signs and other set up, and to all three of them for the forethought given, and for arriving early.  Thanks to Amber, (tireless and upbeat), to Divine, Jonathan, Jean, Vesper, Peg and many others.

Were the numbers big? I do not know actually, but I do know that the place was hopping, and the Spirit was alive here, and that is a grand thing to be able to remember.

Thank God for inspiring any and all.  It does a heart good.  May we continue such hopeful and positive efforts, each of us stepping up and helping out in whatever way we can.  May we thank God when we remember one another.

In Christ,
Pastor Randy
(Remember 9/11 today)

"Lord, help us in our remembering to count our blessings.  Help us to recall again and again the people that have enriched our lives.  Strengthen us to be a blessing in the lives of others, in your name and to your glory.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."        Psalm 118:24

We use those words at the beginning of worship from time to time.  Not too long ago someone asked me about them.  I had assumed that everyone knew those words, or knew them enough so that, when I offered the first half of the verse they would naturally respond with the second half.  Folks do not always know what we are saying in the church, so even if it is meant in the most positive sense, it may leave people out.  You think I would have learned enough by now, to not assume anymore, but I keep doing it.

So those words are from the book of Psalms, Jesus song book.  I love the verse, especially to shout out, "This is the day the Lord has made!", and to have the response shouted back, "Let us rejoice and be glad in it!"

As for those words and what they mean to us, can we always mean it when we shout them?  I have my doubts there.  Does the thought that they propose even come to mind some days?  I know for certain that it does not. I will try to remember it more often, but I do not assume that I always will.

Rejoicing in the gifts,
Pastor Randy

"Loving Creator, heal us, find us, free us.  We hold secrets in our hearts that only you know.  With loving grace, draw us to bring those to light.  We are safe in you, we are forgiven by you, we are healed by your hand.  Bring us peace where there is anxiety, hope where there is despair, mercy where there is failure.  It is with hope and assurance we pray to you.  Amen."
