Pastor's Weekly Message

"Wail, O cypress, for the cedar has fallen. Wail, oaks of Bashan, for the thick forest has been felled!"  Zechariah 11:7

While that verse is more likely about the leaders, the shepherds, of Israel having fallen rather than actual trees, it still seemed to fit an experience of mine from this past Sunday.  One that will stick with me for a bit.

It was Sunday afternoon and I had just stepped into the garage when I heard a very loud cracking sound.  I knew it was the sound of a tree falling and I flung open the back door wondering what exactly I would find, immediately giving thanks for the fact that I had not heard the noise of a tree crashing into the house.

My first sight was of the still bouncing branches of about 50 feet worth of Ash tree settling into our back yard.  What was left of the garden was underneath it.  Only half of the tree had fallen.  In sharp contrast to the hue of the day clean white wood stood out in a couple of places, showing clearly where the tree had been torn in half and then again.

I simply spoke the words to the air, "Oh no!"  Not a wail I suppose, but close.  It was a big tree, and I do not know how old it is, but with that sudden crash my view out back is forever changed.  In the twinkling of an eye.  Foolishly to some I suppose, but I mourn the loss of the piece of creation.  Another reminder to pay attention to the gifts while they are before us, because you never know....

The beauty of this mammoth creature is gone forever..  A reminder too of the power of the storm, and that there may be weakness where we would never suspect.  Many lessons I suppose, but first this feeling of loss.

Thanks for the gifts Lord, may we enjoy them while we can,
Pastor Randy

"God, regret can be such a frightening word.  It assumes that we are broken, imperfect and will fail.  No matter how much we do right, there will be moments where we will choose the lesser thing, turn down the wrong road, or follow the wrong path.  But, this we know, your grace is greater than our wrong choices.  You never look upon us with regret.  you see us as we are and love us in it all.  Thank you for that love.  Amen."
