SOV Saints

Dear Saints of Shepherd of the Valley,

Please know that you remain in our prayers, as you continue to pray for Pastor Randy and Choice, as well as Pastor Stuart and Mindy.

Bishop Dave and I know it is hard when a crisis, or two, occur, and we have to wait for answers and health.  Each crisis rings alarm bells from our past!  At the end of 1 Corinthians 13, there is the verse, Now I know in part, then I shall understand fully even as I have been fully understood.  I take that to mean that when I get to heaven, I will get an appointment card with God so that I can ask all the hard questions and gain insight and understanding.

Until that time, let us walk together, trusting that God is leading us.

Wednesday's Message

That Baaad Girl
John 4.5-42

Ok, let's settle this one before Sunday. It may indeed be true that the woman at the well was a serial monogamist, flitting from man to man and shacking up with another one right now. It could be, but I don't think so.

This is because men were granted divorces, not women (Deut 24.1-4) so she couldn't be the one initiating the divorce. This would mean that she had been rejected four times by four different men and is now living as she is because she doesn't want that to happen again.

She could also be a widow four times over. In Hebrew law, if a man died and the couple had no children, the woman would be given to her husband's brother (Deut. 25.5-6). If there was a brother but he was too young to marry her, she would be kept at her father-in-law's household until the brother grew up. Thus her man (the younger brother) is not married to her even though she is living with him (in his father's house).

The public humiliation of being repeatedly rejected or relentlessly widowed would certainly be enough to keep her from the well when the other women were there. After all, they would all know of her humiliation and would certainly attack her verbally. If you don't believe that, talk to a girl in middle or high school about the merciless way the "cool girls' pick on the unpopular ones.

So she could be a baaaad girl, as most of us were taught. But I think she was a woman humiliated by the circumstances of her life, a woman who tried to hide herself because everything else hurt too much. And here she is by the well in the middle of the day, and here comes Jesus looking for a drink.

Wednesday Message

Beloved Cosmos
John 3.1-17

Cosmos is a Greek word usually translated "world" as in the known world and the whole earth. It also means the everything which is why when astronomers wanted a word to mean "everything that is" they used cosmos. This changes the sense of that much beloved verse 3.16 because the word translated "world" is actually "the cosmos.'

To add to the fun, the 'so' in "so loved" is more accurately 'thus, so, in this way' which leads to this interesting translation. "For in this way God loved the cosmos, he gave..." Which means that Jesus is the way God loves the cosmos. Thus the whole cosmos (which includes us) is loved and saved through Jesus. This makes that passage in Romans 8 clearer. This is the passage where Paul says that Creation is in bondage just as we are and with us awaits redemption in Jesus [Romans 8.19-23]. So the cosmos, all of creation, is both beloved by and precious to God, precious enough to give His Son. The idea that the earthly, material, cosmic world is somehow bad or not beloved by God comes from Plato, not from Scripture.

Thus the whole cosmos, everything you see from the stars to the soil and under the soil, everyone you know and don't know, is God's beloved. When you go outside in sun or rain, or just plain grey, stop and see this cosmos God loved with His Son. Breathe in the scents of spring and feel the breeze blowing "where it wills." This too, along with all animals is God's beloved cosmos. It is a cosmos in which you and I belong, world without end...

Amen

Wednesday Message

Adam is a Jerk
Genesis 3.1-7

It's popular to assume that this whole temptation story took place off in the corner between Eve and the snake. Adam, we assumed, was totally ignorant of all this until Eve showed up with the fruit. But verse six is clear, he was standing right there during the whole thing! And then when he was caught out, did you notice how he tried to get a twofer on the blame passing game? In verse twelve he says "This woman, that You gave me, she did it." You see God, it's not actually my fault, if You hadn't given me this woman I never would have eaten the fruit.  Yep, Adam is a total jerk.

We generally let him get away with being a jerk in part because we don't want to admit our own jerkiness. It is so much easier to say 'hey, at least I am not like her/him/them, I'm basically a good person.' While hoping that no one asks about the stuff we swept under the carpet. It is far easier to be that 'oh no, I'm just fine, everything is ducky in my world' person than to look at ourselves closely.

Lent however, is a time to do just that. It is a time to seriously review our lives, to ask the potentially embarrassing and humiliating questions of ourselves. "What do I believe?" "Do I act like I believe it?" "Where am I going and do I really want to go there?" Our inner Adam will try to convince us that we're just fine as we are and besides, we're too busy to spend time on stuff like that. But like I said, Adam is a jerk so why would we want to listen to him?

Did I mention that Adam is a jerk?
