Wednesday Message

“Welcome one another… as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”  Romans 15:7

Hello, Saints!

Some of you haven’t met me, but I led worship at SOV on March 30, so some may remember me.  Thank you for welcoming me so warmly that day.  As I said to folks then, you are a warm, compassionate, and resilient group.  I’m glad to be serving as your pastor, even if it’s just for a short while.

Let me tell you a bit about myself.  I’m from Wisconsin, and served my first years of ministry in Chicago.  I have a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics from Loyola University in Chicago.  My spouse, Jill James, and I have lived in Portland since 2001.  She recently retired from the Spiritual Care Dept. at Emanuel Hospital, where she was a staff chaplain working with medically fragile babies and their families.  I was pastor at Central Lutheran in Portland from 2004-2011; and before that, the interim pastor at Bethany in Portland.  I’m presently on leave from call — so, I’m available to walk with you now.  I share Pastor Randy’s interest in the spiritual wonder we call God’s Creation.  I’m grateful to be welcome with you.

God welcomes all beings in Creation.  No matter who we are, or have been, Jesus welcomes us into his body, the church.  And we welcome one another here for the glory of God.  When we welcome one another in Christ, we help each other live well, live with grace, beauty, mercy, and compassion as we get to know God better.  In Christ, we welcome each other to fullness of life.  For, as Bishop Irenaeus said long ago, “The glory of God is a human being fully alive” — and the glory of the human being is God fully alive in us.

“Gracious God, as Holy Week draws near, help us leave behind all that holds us apart from you.  Help us live by your love and grace.  May we awaken each new day closer to fulfillment in you.  Amen.”

Pastor Brian Brandt
