Wednesday Message

"When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory." Colossians 3:4

I just met with the Wednesday morning Bible study group.  We talked about the word "glory" in Colossians 3:1-4, the epistle reading for Easter Sunday.  The upshot: being revealed with Christ "in glory" is about humans sharing in God's celebration of God's own life. That is the fruit of Jesus' resurrection.  It's a grand vision for a fully human life — a vision that empowers us in hope and spiritual practice.

Easter is the start our spiritual practice. We begin with resurrection. Easter is traditionally a day for baptisms, because baptism is all about the power of Christ's resurrection activated in us. Meditating on resurrection, glory, and spiritual practice, I find myself thinking of a hymn I love, but seldom sing.  It's not easy to sing, but I want to share a verse of this hymn with you because it tells the spiritual adventure that awaits as we come to the festival of resurrection.

The hymn is called "I Bind unto Myself Today."  It's in the Lutheran Book of Worship (188).  The words are attributed to St. Patrick (4th-5th century).  It's the second verse I find striking:

I bind this day to me forever / by power of faith Christ's incarnation
His baptism in the Jordan River / his cross of death for my salvation
His bursting from the spic├ęd tomb / his riding up the heavenly way
His coming at the day of doom / I bind unto myself today.

That is the church's story of Jesus Christ.  His story is ours, by the grace of God.  This Easter, as we celebrate Christ unbound from the tomb, please remember you are bound to Christ by faith.  He is the way; the song I've quoted sings the path.  As you follow Jesus, let St. Patrick's song guide your steps to glory.
