Pastor's Wednesday Message

Something unusual will happen this Sunday.  We'll be sending people away from SOV. No, this isn't a disciplinary action.  Youth Group members are going to the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit, Michigan.  They'll fly from PDX on July 13.  But we'll send them from SOV with prayers and blessings at both worship services on July 12 — end of the first service, beginning of the second.

I hope you will make a special effort to attend worship this Sunday so you can support the Youth Group with your presence, prayers, and affirmation.  Here's an overview of what awaits in Detroit:

Rise Up Together — ELCA Youth Gathering 2015

We are a church energized by lively engagement in faith and life.  Daily programs are the heart of the gathering.  Through these activities, youth and adult leaders are inspired to grow in their faith.

There are five major components to the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering daily programming.

Each day, youth, volunteers, and Adult Leaders will gather in Ford Field to hear the day's Scripture text articulated by engaging speakers and Christian musicians, as well as stimulating video and interpretive dance.

During the middle of the day, congregational groups will participate in a three-day activity rotation that includes a day of service in the Detroit metropolitan area (Proclaim Justice Day), a day of exploratory learning with other groups from their synod (Proclaim Story Day), and a day of interactive learning in the Convention Center (Proclaim Community Day).

The fifth program component is called Community Life, which takes place in various venues, including some hotels. The Community Life activities include dances, game rooms, prayer stations, and an activity called Final 15. The Final 15 was introduced at the 2006 ELCA Youth Gathering in San Antonio, and has been a program staple ever since. It is a 15-minute time period where everyone at the Gathering, regardless of where they are located, stops to pray and reflect on the Scripture of the day.

The Gathering concludes with Eucharist on Sunday morning, at which Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will preach.

I could tell you all about the great activities and outstanding speakers our kids will encounter, but that would take a much longer letter.  It's sufficient to say our kids will be powerfully blessed by the Holy Spirit at the Gathering.  Let's send them off with a powerful blessing at worship on Sunday.  Please come to give them the power of your blessing personally!
