Pastor's Wednesday Message

Dear fellow sheep of the Shepherd of the Valley,

A recent edition of the Christian Century magazine tells an interesting story.

Jews first came to Sicily over 2000 years ago. They were probably brought there as slaves after the Romans subjugated Jerusalem in the first century. Over time their descendants established communities on the island and built synagogues, including a large one in the city of Palermo.

In 1493, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, who ruled Sicily at the time, expelled all the Jews from the island. Their communities were abolished, and the Great Synagogue of Palermo was destroyed. In its place, a Christian chapel was built.

In modern times Jews have reestablished themselves in Sicily. Their communities are alive once more. This year the Roman Catholic Church in Sicily transferred the chapel that had been built on the site of the Great Synagogue to a group of Jews who gratefully accepted it. The building will become a synagogue for the Palermo Jews. A rabbi has been appointed to serve the community.

What a wonderful example of reconciliation. It shows that people of different faiths and backgrounds can right wrongs, even ancient ones, and work together to build a future.

May we also reach out, in Christ, to others, to reconcile, make peace, and right wrongs, even ancient ones.

     In Christ, Pastor Tom

Thank you from Pastor Brian

Dear Friends, I'm writing to say thank you for the great send-off you gave me on January 29, my last Sunday at SOV.  I treasure my memories of that day — the fine worship service, the budget meeting, and then the farewell party you held for me.  I felt so happy and so blessed to receive kind words of appreciation from so many of you who shared in the goodness of that day.  I also want to express my gratitude for the many gifts I received — I had a lot of cards and souvenirs to sort through!  Among those was a gift of money so bountiful that I feel both thankful and a bit overwhelmed by the congregation's generosity.  I also want to add my thanks for a generous Christmas gift of money.  I received that in mid-January due to all the crazy weather in the first half of the month, and I didn't get a chance to convey my thanks before I departed.  So now, though belated, I want you to know how much I appreciate your generosity at Christmas, too.
I still pray frequently for SOV, asking God that the congregation may be well, be happy, and thrive.  I pray daily for the Call Committee, asking God to send a new pastor soon who will accept your call and serve you well for a long time to come.  My ministry with you made me a better person and a better pastor.  God grant that your new pastor will also feel so blessed to serve and love God in partnership with all of you.
Wishing you joy and life in Jesus Christ,
Pastor Brian
