Wednesday Happenings

Tonight we gather at 6:30 for our first Advent Evening Prayer Service, following a 5:30 soup supper. We will be singing the service "Holden Evening Prayer" with a short reading and advent meditation during the service. Each week we will look at a section of the familiar Christmas story in Luke, Chapter 2 and asking the question: Where do we find Jesus?  Tonight we look for Jesus "In the World".  See you there!

The season of Advent begins on Sunday. Our worship service will have a couple of new (and traditional) elements added: the Service of Confession and Forgiveness at the beginning and the Apostles' Creed following the hymn of the sermon and hymn of the day. Advent is a season of "getting ready", focused on the impending and immanent presence of Jesus the Anointed one of God. Sunday worship in Advent is a wonderful way to keep the true impact of Christmas in our lives.

On the 2nd Sunday of Advent we will celebrate Holy Baptism, and on the third Sunday of the season we will be receiving new members! If you are interested in joining Shepherd of the Valley please contact Pastor Dan or the church office to make sure we are ready!

A note for your calendar: the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve are both on the same calendar date this year, December 24! We will have only one service that morning (and on December 31st, New Year's Eve Day as well).

Have a good Advent!

Along the way,

Pastor Dan

Wednesday Happenings

Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope your plans and celebrations for the day of gratitude are fulfilled and that the blessings of God become real in new ways for you all.

On Sunday we celebrate "Christ the King",
the church holiday that falls on the last Sunday of the church year and that reminds us that God's rule is eternal and remains complete even as human structures and temples fall and fail. There will be an insert in the bulletin on "Shalom", the Hebrew concept of peace, completeness, fulfillment and joy among other things. In short "shalom" is a prayer for the realization of the vision of the rule of a good and gracious God among us. The words come from a sermon preached by the Rev. Dr.  George Madsen, a teacher of the church whom I had the joy of meeting a few years back at a presentation by his daughter, the Rev. Dr. Anna Madsen, another teacher of the church. It is with his permission that I will share these words with you on Sunday.

Mid-week Advent Services begin on November 29. We will gather at 6:30 (following a 5:30 Soup Supper) to sing "Holden Evening Prayer" and reflect briefly on this season of preparation. The season of Advent begins on Sunday, December 3 and moves us through December to the celebration of the birth of Jesus on Christmas eve.

Wednesday Adult Bible Study
will be suspended during Advent and will begin again in January.

Confirmation Class meets on the 3rd Sunday from 12:30 to 2:30.  We are weaving a study of Bible and Catechetical instruction along with searching for the presence of God in our very real lives. We listen for God's word alive in music, art and in movies like "Up". We are off to a wonderful start!

Prayers for you all as we journey along the way.

Pastor Dan

Wednesday's Highlights

Things to keep  in mind this week …..

First, this Sunday is the Third Sunday!  Confirmation class meets following the second service until about 2:30 p.m. Bring your Bibles, questions, concerns, music and whatever means "faith" to you!

Please remember to keep the elected and appointed leadership of SOV in your prayers as council meets this week to attend to the business amid the busyness of being the church. Leadership is in the process of putting together a Spending Plan (Budget) that will allow us to serve the world as followers of Jesus.

Bible Study continues on Wednesday mornings at 10:00; the text for today is Matthew 25.14-30. The following week there will be no Wednesday Bible study as we will all be preparing for Thanksgiving! (If you want to read ahead the Gospel for Sunday the 26th it will be Matthew 25.31-46.)

This brings us to December 3, the season of Advent— the church's "new year" and the time of preparation to hear again the story of the God who surrounds us all coming to walk with us through a human child in Bethlehem. Sunday worships will move us toward the celebration of Christmas as will the half-hour weekly services at 6:30 on Wednesday nights, following a soup supper at 5:30.

Along the way,  Pastor Dan
