Pastor's Weekly Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

Our God is a God of surprises:  God sees potential where we see worthlessness.  When things seem grim and the forces opposed to life seem to be winning the day, God finds a way to bring hope out of despair.  Sometimes God even uses those who don't know God to accomplish God's purposes.  We find an example of this in the first reading appointed for this coming Sunday, in which God uses the Gentile ruler Cyrus to accomplish the divine purpose of ending Israel's exile.  In our gospel lesson, we observe that when the religious authorities try to trip Jesus up, God gives him words of wisdom that stop them in their tracks:  "Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's and to God the things that are God's."  As we gather for worship, we are reminded that our ultimate allegiance is to God rather than to any earthly authority.  Created in the image of God, we offer our entire selves in the service of God and for the sake of the world.

Prayer of the Day

Sovereign God, raise your throne in our hearts.  Created by you, let us live in your image; created for you, let us act for your glory; redeemed by you, let us give you what is yours, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord; Amen

· SOV's Building Committee will be making a presentation this coming Sunday, October 19th, at 10 am.  This is your chance to see and hear about the latest developments in working toward SOV's new and remodeled facilities.

· "Carvin' for the Starvin'" is "happenin'" at Shepherd of the Valley on Saturday, October 25, from 3 to 5 pm.  Kids from 1 to 99 are welcome to come and carve a jack o' lantern or two.  Some of these will be auctioned off on Sunday.  All proceeds go to Shepherd's Storehouse.

· Sunday, October 26th, is Reformation Sunday.  The liturgical color of the day is red, and so I'd like to challenge you to "get the red out!"  Let's wear red in honor of Martin Luther!

In our prayers

· Prayers for safety and wisdom for all who serve in the military;

· Prayers for strength and guidance for all who are caring for loved ones;

· Prayers for strength and guidance for all who are unemployed.
