"He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds." Psalm 148:3
Why those words now? They are not inspired by a specific recent event, but by looking at the list of the commemorations for the whole of the church. That list is about learning about the rich history of our faith, about those who have gone before us. This Friday there are two people listed, Florence Nightingale and Clara Maass, and they are listed as "renewers of society".
In particular it says this about Florence Nightingale, "when she decided to be a nurse, her family was horrified. In the early 1800's nursing was done by people with no training and no other way to earn a living. .... she lead a group of nurses to serve in the Crimean War, where they worked in appalling conditions. She returned to London as a hero and resumed her work there for hospital reform. This commemoration invites the church to give thanks for all who practice the arts of healing."
So we do give thanks for the those who practice that art. We take that seriously here at SOV with our parish nurse and our health team. We recognize the presence of the healing touch of the Creator in a great many ways. As a matter of fact, whether we would know it or not, each one of us has part in the healing of the brokenhearted and the binding up of wounds. May we offer a helping hand where we are able, an encouraging word whenever possible, a simple kindness that can make all the difference in a moment of sorrow.
The healing presence of the Christ in, and even through, us.
In the peace and power of the Christ,
"Holy God, the stories of the saints through all the ages come to us as a gift, for its is through them that we have learned the meaning of faith. We receive this gift with thanks and praise. We are grateful for their example, for showing us the way, for challenging us to continue to live faithful lives. Grant us perseverance when the race gets tough, courage when trials beset us and rest when we grow weary from the struggles of life. May Christ's joy renew us as we fix our eyes on him. Amen."
