"And when the Lord smelled the pleasing odor......" Genesis 8:21
After those words the Lord went on to offer a promise after the time of the great flood. But the words came to mind for me because of the time of the year and some of the experiences it brings with it. Especially there was that smell in the air on Sunday night, late, the first rain after about two months of little rain. The fresh smell. The sweetness of it. It is a "pleasing odor" indeed, and I can scarcely put it into words.
And then less than 24 hours later, walking in the park with Choice, remarking on the smell in the air of this too chilly August evening. It speaks of fall, of the end of some things, of change, and yet it is comforting and a treat to the senses as well.
And later that same night, stepping outside again and taking in the unmistakable scent of the dairy farm not too far away. Hardly a pleasing odor to most I would guess. But it first causes me to think of the farm, of youth, and even such a smell can bring pleasure to some.
And there are more and more of course. What smells bring what memories to you? Can you even now know a pleasing odor? This creation is a rich place, may we continue to know the blessings the Creator wishes for us in it.
From the Psalm Prayer in "Joyous Light", "O God, from the rising of the sun to its setting your name is worthy of all praise. Let prayer rise before you as incense, and with the lifting up of our hands may we offer our whole lives to you, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen."
