Pastor's Weekly Message

"But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him." II Corinthians 2:14
Where we live there are sometimes some very distinctive scents.  There is the occasional skunk.  There is a water treatment plant nearby.  Also, not too far away is a small dairy farm.  For me, when the wind blows right, it is a pleasing fragrance (having grown up on a farm and all).  But I know not everyone feels the same about that.

And just the other day I mowed our yard, and the scent was there right away, but in the evening it rained and it was like a sweet perfume.

The richness of creation meets all of our senses, sometimes for better or worse, as a matter of opinion.

And then there is that scripture that identifies us as a fragrance, based on how we carry forth the love of Christ in our lives.  Wonder what sort of scent we leave behind?

The adventure continues.
In Christ,
Pastor Randy

"Creator, you have blessed us beyond measure and you have called us to use our lives in worship of you.  May our gifts this day flow from hearts of worship to the One who provides all that we need.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"Greetings, favored one!  The Lord is with you." Luke 1:28

That is the angel Gabriel talking to the virgin Mary.  Why those words now?  This Friday is the 25th of March, or the Annunciation of Our Lord, or exactly nine months before Christmas.  (There was a time, from the 6th to the 8th centuries, that this date was observed as New Year's Day in much of Christian Europe.)

One more reminder that the words "the Lord be with you" or "Emmanuel, God with us", are not just for Christmas time.  It is a grand reminder that God's presence in our lives is not relegated to one time of the year more than any other.

No matter the challenges, trials, disappointments, or joys and celebrations, the words to Mary might speak to us as well, "Greetings .... the Lord is with you".

May we take this to heart, look around, and see the truth of it.

In Christ,
Pastor Randy

"Merciful Savior, we say that you love us, but we act as if your will for our lives cannot be trusted.  We profess that you are a faithful God, yet we are riddled with anxiety, fear and impatience.  Give us the courage to look honestly at the disparity between what we say we believe and the truth that our actions and attitudes tell.  We pray for the grace to close the gap between the two.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but ....members of the household of God."  Ephesians 2:20

Friday morning was surrealistic.  The whole night had been like some sort of odd dream.  Before even trying to sleep the news told of the massive earth quake in Japan, and soon of the tsunami headed for the west coast of the United States.  It got my attention, being in Canon Beach at the time.  Then there were the fire trucks making announcements via loudspeakers starting at 2:30am, a call from the front desk at 4:00am.  Then sitting there, up the hill a ways, with many others on Highway 101 from 6:00am on.  Waiting, wondering, there was plenty of time to think.

We were merely inconvenienced.  A sleepless night.  Pack and unpacking.  But most importantly what was going on elsewhere.  A catastrophe reaching across an ocean.  A reminder anew that the suffering of another is really our suffering as well.

Watching report after report now.  Tears filling my eyes as the reality of the magnitude of the suffering settles in, and how personal it is on a such overwhelming scale.  Lord, may we not forget that we are all part of the "household of God".

In the peace and power of the cross,
Pastor Randy

"O God, where hearts are fearful and constricted, grant courage and hope.  Where anxiety is infectious and widening, grant peace and reassurance.  Where spirits are daunted and weakened, grant soaring wings and strengthened dreams.  We ask in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come..." Song of Solomon 2:12

What a couple of days of sunshine and 50 plus degree temperatures will do for the general attitude and whole spirit.  It was a pleasure to stand outside in relative warmth.  There were many crocus and daffodil blooming, of many different shades.  Yes it seemed like there was singing, a song in the heart at least.  And that kind of singing can be pretty sweet as well.

And on this day the singing, of one sort or another, continued into the evening.  Folks gathered at the church by late afternoon.  There were youth making pancakes, dealing with some challenges, but working away with some excellent leaders.  And a crowd gathered.  As per usual we ate, got loud, laughed, were simply present in this place.

And then there was was some singing. Our youth choir sang, Kevin played, it was a continuation of the days joy and beauty.  We are rich folks.  May we recognize our blessedness, see the beauty of the flowers, and sing all the more.

In Christ,
Pastor Randy

"Thank you, merciful God, for the bounty of your creation - for the gifts of the field and vine that nourish our bodies, souls and hearts.  Sustain us by the assurance of your grace given through our Lord, Jesus Christ.  May our lives reflect your presence and may you be our priority.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

Surprises.  God continues to offer surprises.  Maybe not all surprises are pleasing, but some certainly are.  And I continue to give thanks for the surprises that come from the hands of the Creator.

It was my day off and I was about to step outside to watch the rain out back.  But I didn't step out because there was a deer standing in the back yard, an adult, and then I saw another, and then a mere baby.  The young one was almost comical looking.  Some of the coloring of the adults could be seen in him (her?). But there was also longer, darker fur.  Looked like a turtle neck sweater, with a daring mohawk down the back.  (A rebel in the making.)

What were they doing?  Eating grass.  Moved from window to window to watch the excitement.  (Deer eating grass exciting?)  Watched until they wandered off.  Was just stepping outside to watch the rain and there was this sweet surprise.

Thanks Lord.  Trying to pay attention, and give thanks.

In Christ,
Pastor Randy

"Resplendent God, we long to be people who live and walk in the light of your glory, but sometimes we find ourselves shrouded in the darkness of fear, loneliness or despair.  In our anguish we cannot always find you.  Help us trust that you will lead us out of the shadows and back into your radiant presence.  Amen."
