Certainly the storms of my mid-western youth might recall that speeding heart. Watching the roiling clouds with excitement as the winds picked up and the lightening flashed. Not a matter of fear, but excitement. What was coming this time?
A very different view the other day, but still a reminder that creation is not tame. On the golf course, finishing one hole, looking toward the next. Saw a movement in the tall grass. A dog jumping? Stared harder, as if that would make me see more clearly. It was a coyote, playing with a rat, then snacking under the shade of a tree. Drifting away (keeping my eyes on him none the less), and then when we moved to the next green he trotted across the fairway just behind us. Big ears pointed up, tongue lolling, so many different colors, and I think he was smiling as he disappeared into the tall grass.
A momentary surprise, a reminder that much beauty is untamed and the work of the Creator continues.
Thanks of the gifts Lord,
"God of great love, help us to open our hearts to your love and soften our closed minds. Help us to move beyond the mire we find ourselves in by breathing deeply of your Spirit and reaching to our highest selves in you. Enable us to delight in the laughter of a child, the beauty of a sunset, the scent of a rose, and thus, see the glory of your world. In the name of the Christ. Amen."
