Pastor's Weekly Message

"For you, Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy." Psalm 92:4

There have been some trying times for folks lately.  In our little community and beyond.  Some tragic events, some trials, lots of healing to be done, many questions and doubts.  So, how can such a verse be at the heading?

At the center of a prayer in all the sorrow, a little balance.  Thinking of the grins God provides, may we all be able to take them in, at the center of prayer, not be belittle another's pain.

The deep purple of a tall standing iris.  The first roses opening with a scent like the finest perfume.  The startling yellow of the flitting finches, followed by the deep blue of a stellar jay.  The sly grin of littlest grand daughter Daphne, or her toddler legs stumbling toward me with open arms.  Seeing Bill being Bill again after much trial.  The chance that we have, even as our imperfect selves, to be the "gladness and joy" of "God's hands".

May the Creator guide us, bless us and strengthen us,
Pastor Randy

"May the Spirit of God guide us into all truth as we go out in the world.  May our ears be attentive to the still small voice that tells us that we are loved, we are valuable, we are his.  Let the message of the Holy Spirit transform our actions as we seek to follow his gentle guiding.  May we go now in the great peace of the Spirit.  Amen."

Birthday Celebrations!

A special invitation to all our SOV family!

Sunday, June 3 at 5:30 PM

A birthday party to celebrate and honor our 80’s and over SOV family members!

The entire SOV family of Christ will be celebrating being a child of God on Sunday, June 3. We are collecting baby or young age photos of all our members to create a collage of all the children of God at SOV. Please be sure to either copy a photo to share or bring it to church and let us copy it for you.

The day concludes with a special new birthday club for all our members that are turning 80 years old this year or who are already 80 years old and older! This will be the first annual 80 and over birthday club celebration! This event is for everyone in the congregation to come together in celebration as we honor these special members.

We will have beverages, birthday cake and ice cream. We encourage all ages to be part of celebrating this young at heart age group of SOV. This time together creates new and stronger ties as a family of Christ and is a special gift to each of us!

If you are younger than 80 and want to help serve this special group of members over 80, please contact Tammy, Diane or Peggy.

Let’s see who the youngest and oldest in attendance will be!

Celebrate the child in all of us!

Pastor's Weekly Message

It is a marvelous miracle unfolding in the back yard. There are two bird houses, both occupied. The one nearest the house has caught most of my attention. I noticed the sparrows that had moved in there several weeks ago, and in the last 10 days their young family has been impossible to ignore.

Two little mouths constantly at the entrance, demanding attention, chirping, squawking, and being met by their parents, also constant response, providing, feeding, seemingly tireless in their efforts. The reality of life, survival and a creation that continues to unfold.

Sometimes we are the parents, sometimes the babies. Lord, care for us in our incessant needs, and strengthen us as we endeavor to care for others. May we take in the miracles that surround us.

In thanks to the Creator of all things,
Pastor Randy

"God of all creation and all peoples, we offer thanks that you hold our hearts in yours and that you hear our prayers, whether we speak with the eloquence of saints or with sighs too deep for words. Open our hearts to the power of your spirit that we might be a people refreshed in our dedication to you. Grant us the grace to allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, that we might live as faithful disciples of Jesus; let it be that by knowing us, others may know you. Through us, O God, let your kingdom come. Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:6-7

Have turned to those words countless times. Sometimes the need is greater than others, the worries a little more threatening, and the reality of getting beyond them seems a little less likely. But the promise is always the same.

And so again, when a day seems absurdly full, these words of comfort come to mind. With sometimes faltering faith it is especially the words "the peace of God, which passes all understanding" that are the most needed.  Even the possibility of faith is a gift.

The adventure continues, please strengthen and guide us Lord.

Pastor Randy

"We give thanks for our gifts of love and thanksgiving.  Help us give with hearts and minds open to the possibilities of what we can do to  heal the brokenness of our world.  Let our love travel where we do not, making pathways of peace where there are none, through Christ our Lord.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth."  Genesis 9:13

It was my day off and there were a couple of boxes with words like "to be assembled" waiting. The kind of boxes that used to cause my family to leave house when I opened them. No problem this time. I was already alone.

Things got done pretty peaceably and the upshot of it all made me marvel at the colors around me. Thus the reference to the box of color in Genesis. It is not only there that I am reminded of God's colorful love.  That day it was also in the grass and how different the greens were from shadow to sunlight, then to the green of the trees, capped off by a brilliant azure sky. There were colors too in the stellar jay and finches, who were bold enough to come near to me. And the single iris at the south end of the house, a deep blue and brilliant yellow. Just a few of the myriad reminders of blessedness.

Thanks again Lord, and please remind me when glumness over takes me to pay attention.

In Christ,
Pastor Randy

"Slow us down O God, and speed us up.  Let us be slow to speak out in judgmental anger and quick to offer words of encouragement and understanding.  enable us to catch the vision of lives seeking similarities rather than differences, of common ground rather than divergent roads. Enable us to catch the vision of Jesus , in whom all things are one, through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Pastor's Weekly Message

The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, ...."  Song of Solomon 2:12
In the bible I am using right now these words are part of a section entitled "Springtime Rhapsody".  My senses can attest to the truth of that.  Their is beauty to be taken in all over the place.

Taking in the tulips, lilacs, wisteria and their scents and colors.  Hearing the creek gurgling and the tree frogs conversing, the back yard filled with birds singing, chasing one another, and the squirrels leaping and cavorting.  Having been in central Oregon for a bit and taking in the beauty of the night time sky there, and the silence, looking at the mountains on the drive back, the distinct peaks of Broken Top, the Three Sisters, Three Fingered Jack, Washington and Jefferson, such beauty.  Driving along and seeing parts of the streets literally pink from flowering trees.  And that is but a small part of the wonders that surround us.

The creation sings and we are invited to join in the chorus.  When feeling burdened and worried may we be lifted by the Creator's invitation to sing.

Glory to you O God,
Pastor Randy
