"In old age they still produce fruit; they are always green and full of sap." Psalm 92:14
Her name was Athleen Bluhm and she was 93 years old. She was one of the first people I called on nearly 30 years ago. She graciously called me "pastor", a long haired, big bearded, 28 year old. She gave me unearned respect and taught me loads about acceptance. And so I have continued to be taught by my elders.
This past Sunday evening we had a bit of a birthday party for members of our Shepherd family who are 80+ years old. Though they may not consider themselves such, they are teachers amongst us. May we take the time to honor them, learn from them and know, as the psalmist did "they still produce fruit ... are always green and full of sap." (That really is a compliment.) Teach us well. I wish to be full of sap some day my self.
Thanks for the gifts among us Lord,
"God, we truly want to hear from you. We believe that you do speak to us and we are ready to listen. Give us ears that will hear the truth you want to communicate to us today. Stretch our hearts as you challenge us through your word. Help us to remember that your voice was not just for the prophets of long ago, but that you also speak to us today. Help us not to miss it. Amen."
