Pastor's Weekly Message

"Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark....."  John 20:1

So begins John's recounting of the resurrection of Jesus.  John spends a lot of time writing of the battle between darkness and light, and so why wouldn't that be the case at this momentous time as well?

So we get the light through the darkness.  Maundy Thursday brings the "new commandment", to love one another.  Jesus brings this forward even as he washes the feet of his disciples, even the one who would betray him.  In the darkness.

The darkness of Good Friday and the cross itself.  The Christ meeting us again in our lowest moments, the darkness of life itself.

And tonight's reminder for me, stepping outside, hoping for a glimpse of the nearly full moon before turning in.  No light, but in the darkness the sound of the frog choir from the creek down below.  A reminder of the promise of life in the face of the darkness itself.

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness does not overcome it.

Pastor Randy

"Holy God, wake us up if we are asleep, calm the storm if we are overwhelmed, or hold us fast if we are running - whatever it takes, open our hearts and minds to hear your voice as you speak a new and life changing word to us.  Because of the Christ we pray.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."   Psalm 118:24

Those are great words, especially when we shout them with some commitment to their veracity.  On a beautiful day, after hearing a particularly beautiful piece of music, basking in a moment that lifts our spirits.  Then it can be easy to shout those words, and a lot of fun as well.

But how about different situations?  Maybe it is foolishness to think that those words can be said with the same joy on the days that are not filled with promise.  When it is gray and sullen all around.  When illness dominates and the air itself seems devoid of the possibility of music.  We do know those kinds of days all too well too. But it may be then that we most need to be assured of the hope contained in those words from the psalmist.

Speaking, reading quietly, or hearing them for ourselves, may those words come from, or head straight to, our hearts.

"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, ..."  Song of Solomon 2:12

The flowers indeed continue to flourish, more and more daffodils, especially around our place.  But thinking too of those thousands  of them along Highway 26, by Hillsboro stadium, blooming again as they did last year and the year before that.  Thanks to whoever put them all there.  A sweet treat to those who take note while flying by.

As for the singing, the beauty of the blooms does lift my heart, but there is other singing going on as well.  On this nearly still night, the frogs are filling up the darkness with a song of their own.  It is a chorus that brings me a certain amount of peace and leaves me with a bit of a grin as well.  Thanks for the treats Lord.

In praise of the Creator,
Pastor Randy

From Brennan Manning, "Dear Lord, grant me the grace of wonder.  Surprise me, amaze me, awe me in every crevice of Your universe.  Delight me to see how Your Christ plays in ten thousand places, lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not His, to the Father through the features of men's faces. Each day enrapture me with Your marvelous things without number.  I do not ask to see the reason for it all; I ask only to share the wonder of it all."  Amen.

Pastor's Weekly Message

"Every valley shall we be lifted up ... the uneven ground shall become level ....." Isaiah 40:4

....but until then, things are not always smooth.  There are peaks and valleys.  One day the sun is shining rightly, inviting us to partake in the wonders of nature.  And the next we are hunching our shoulders against the wind and rain (why do we do that? does it some how make us less wet?).

One moment there is the joy of worship, smile and voices, people gathered after, simple yet grand stuff.  And then there are real sorrows, and concerns, that sometimes would suck the very joy out of life.  That is a reality too, but in the end not the only reality.

Even in the rain the green shoots are everywhere, some of them blooming now, because of that self same rain.  The Daphne bush is producing sweet smelling blooms for the first time since it was planted, undaunted by the rain.  Here in this community of faith we are headed toward drama of Holy week, culminating in the celebration of the resurrection.  And beyond that there are other joyous moments anticipated, with the coming of new lives in our midst, sings that even now, "valleys are being lifted up".

Thank you Lord for the present gifts, part of a grander promise yet to come.

In Christ,
Pastor Randy

"Today Lord, for at least a moment, help us to lay aside our lists and focus on your gifts and blessings to us.  Help us to take in the work of your grace in our lives.  And we wait expectantly and patiently for you to speak and to make yourself know to us in new and surprising ways.  For the sake of the Christ.  Amen."
