Pastor's Weekly Message

"For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, 'This is my body that is for you.  Do this is remembrance of me.'"  I Corinthians 11:23-24

Listened to the pod cast, or more accurately had it on while I was reading and moving about.  I usually check it just to hear that the recording did take place. But this day I let it play through, again without paying much attention, but then I noticed something, and this is what I heard.

The choir was singing "Lamb of God" during communion, with Katrina leading with some solo pieces.  It was absolutely lovely.  Barely audible, as a sort of under-current, the words "the body of Christ given for you", can be heard again and again.  The Lamb of God and the body of Christ meshing perfectly.

It made me think of a little girl who was quoted in the Lutheran magazine a few years ago.  She would hold on to a bit of the bread she received on Sunday morning so she would have some God to take with her into the week.

There is sub-text of God with us, even when we are not necessarily aware.  It is the body of Christ amidst the joyous busyness of the week.  May we always take a little bit of that with us.

In the peace and power of the Christ,
Pastor Randy

"Gracious God, sometimes we sprint through our days trying to get to some sort of finish line.  Help us to notice the clouds in the sky or savor the smell of the freshly mowed grass.  Help us to play games, to listen to stories, to cherish silence.  Please draw us to you so that we may know again the richness of life.  Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"...so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." Matthew 10:16

The snake is often equated with Satan because of its part in the story of the fall in Genesis.  But the snake, as these words of Jesus would attest, is also seen in a positive light as well.  (Especially consider its saving role in the wilderness in Numbers 21:8-9.)  There was a time when the staffs of bishops ended in a spiral terminating in a serpent's head (that little morsel comes from a book called "The Bestiary of Christ").

So much more could be said, and has been written, about snake in scripture.  I bring it up here because a couple of weeks ago I had my first snake sightings of the spring.  They were harmless and helpful little black and gold striped garter snakes.  I saw four of them.  They usually startle me a bit because they don't move till I practically step on them.  But then they fascinate me.  Their fluid, rolling movement, constantly darting tongue, posturing, all cause me to watch them closely.  In them I see still more of the beauty of the creation.  I know that they creep many people out, but those fears aside, they are pretty cool.

There is that mention of doves too.  We have a couple of those who have been frequenting our house of late.  They are morning doves, which has nothing to do with the time of day they are present.  Their cooing is soothing to me, and their nervous tittering when they are surprised sounds down right silly.

There are so many wonders, off putting reptiles, nervous birds, such a variety of creation, beauty abounds.  But beware lest we step on it.

Still in praise of the Creator,
Pastor Randy

"Sometimes the road seems so long, and the pain so deep, or the sorrow overwhelming.  Help us then to know your peace Lord, the peace of the one who formed the road, and knows sorrow all too well.  Guide us in our steps.  In Christ, Amen."

Pastor's Weekly Message

"One thing I asked of the Lord, ... to behold the beauty of the Lord,....." Psalm 27:4

Alright, so maybe I asked for more than that, but the beauty part has certainly been fulfilled over and over again.  Seeing the roses blossom out front, and now some lilies as well.  Watching the finches, and other birds, fuss and fight around the feeders.  Seeing a shadow pass in front of the window early Tuesday morning, pulling back the curtains to see a young deer standing in our front yard.  Listening to the SOV choir on Sunday evening (and so much other excellent music). Watching little Naomi dance on Sunday morning, and hearing her "amen" as well.  Seeing baby Valorie resting so comfortably in Patrick's arms, and his smile as he gazes down at her.

The "beauty of the Lord", and I could go on and on.  In the midst of my worries, real and imagined, small ones and world wide ones, there is a need to behold the beauty around me.  Is that true for you as well?  Make a list of the beauty.  Take a moment.  May it soften the harshness that sometimes seems to dominate this world.

Always and forever, in praise of the Creator,
Pastor Randy

"O God, we trust in your power to create, to sustain, to enable.  But we could not trust you if we did not know that you are always near.  Be with us Lord, enable us to bring all that we are to you, so that we might experience your touch upon all aspects of our life.  Amen."
