Wednesday's Message

From Pastor Stuart Holland

Happy Blessings
Psalm 119.1-2

Happy is not a word we usually associate with the Old Testament but here it is at the beginning of Psalm 119 just as it begins Psalm 1. The word the NRSV insists on translating as "happy" is used in other places to mean "blessed" the same kind of blessed we have at the beginning of Matthew 5 "Blessed are..." So part of this life of faith is receiving both happiness and blessing.

I felt both happy and blessed last Thursday around noon when it started to snow. Hey, who am I kidding, I was so happy I could squeal and I certainly got a few raised eyebrows at the coffee shop. But there was a reason for my joy. You see, it was snowing like it did every year when I was growing up in New England. Snow told us all "this is Winter, can you see its' beauty?" From the whisper of new dry snow to the way the heavens would clear to a deep blue so intense it seemed like the sky would crack to the way the whole world sparkle with diamonds, all of these things invited us to stop and pay attention. Some people, did not like the snow and acted like it was an unfair imposition that kept their lives from being productive. They fought the snow and complained about the snow and were just plain miserable because of the snow. I understand why they thought that way and why I'm sure some Portlanders' think this way too but it never made sense to me.

Snow is like forgiveness. It falls on everyone and everything, it mutes hard edges and creates beauty. It transforms the landscape in an unmistakable, un-ignorable way and by its nature changes the way we move and live. We can fight it or surrender to it but we cannot pretend it is not there. Snow changes your life, just like forgiveness. You reassess priorities ("is this meeting really necessary?") and give in to wonder ("Oh, look at that!") and sit at the window with something warm in a mug or someone warm on our lap (purring is optional). For me it is a happy blessing and I hope you were able to receive some of that blessing too.
