Wednesday Message

We are a storied people.  We dwell in stories.  We tell our children stories so they grow up right, knowing who they are and how to live.  We have family stories, stories from the town where we grew up, stories of the adventures, crises, and triumphs that have made us who we are.  These are stories we share when we want someone to be close to us, when we want to share who we really are.

God knows we live in stories.  That's why the Bible is, mostly, stories.  It teaches us about the God we can't see by telling us stories about traces of God we can see.  So the old hymn goes, "I love to tell the story / of unseen things above, / of Jesus and his glory, / of Jesus and his love. / I love to tell the story, / because I know it's true; / it satisfies my longings / as nothing else can do."

SOV has stories, too.  We become part of this people by sharing the stories of generations of saints in this place, what they have loved, risked, offered, accomplished.  Living in this community of faith means knowing its stories, telling its stories.  SOV is a living river of faith fed by the streams of stories told and heard by our friends, our children, our selves.  We tell our stories of faith and church when we want to share who we really are with God.

This Sunday, May 31, we're having a "Heritage Discussion."  It's storytelling time.  The Transition Task Force is sponsoring this event to help us prepare to call a new pastor.  We prepare for the future by honoring the past.  And we honor the past by telling our stories.  Stories about former pastors, stories about the great or tragic things that happened while those pastors were here.  Stories about saints who labored and stumbled and succeeded in bringing this faith community to where it is today.  Doing so, we help ourselves to know where we want to go from here.

Please come this Sunday to share your stories.  We begin worship at 10:00.  When worship is done, we'll set out food and drink, then start the storytelling.  I'll facilitate the conversation but you'll be the storytellers.  Please join the conversation and help us honor SOV's heritage.  We'll all be richer for it, stronger in faith, better prepared to live into the story God is telling, the never-ending story of Jesus and his love.

Pastor's Wednesday Message

Confirmation!  It's happening this Sunday for Julia Kotvis and Avery Marlia.  This is a big day, the culmination of much good faith and hard work by these two young women.  I've worked with both of them in Confirmation Class.  Pastor Randy has, too.  We agree that these two children of SOV are getting grown up now and are ready to be Confirmed as adults in the Christian Faith.

Both these young women are special for many reasons.  So something special is going to happen as we confirm them.  Pastor Randy and I will co-lead the Rite of Confirmation.  Normally, when a pastor leaves office, that pastor does not take part in leading worship services thereafter, at least not soon.  However, as many of you know, Avery is Pastor Randy's grand-daughter.  When I began thinking about what this event would look like for Avery and Julia, I just couldn't see it happening without Pastor Randy taking part.

So I will lead some parts of the rite; Pastor Randy will lead others.  Since he is the pastor who had the largest part overall in their preparation to be confirmed, it seemed right that he should be the one to perform the words that officially confirm Avery and Julia in the Christian faith.  Pastor Randy also worked with them to prepare their personal statements of faith, so he will offer a brief introduction to those statements near the beginning of the rite.

This Sunday is also the Day of Pentecost, the festival when the church celebrates its birth in a burst of spiritual energy from God.  It is the festival of surprise, of new beginnings, of signs and wonders that open up a hopeful future for God's people.  So it's entirely fitting that we should be welcoming these two young women, with their emerging maturity and novel ideas, into the ranks of responsible adults at Shepherd of the Valley.  Well done, Avery and Julia.  We'll be there to support you on Sunday.  May God bless you both!

Wednesday Message

I'm back from a week of vacation.  I thank God for the time off.  What did I do?  Mostly, I stayed at home, rested and played.  Portland is lovely in the spring.  It was nice to kick back and enjoy it.  Once I slowed down, I realized how weary I'd become since my last vacation (early December).  Then I thought of all the seasons and changes at SOV during those five months.  Here's a short list:

· Christmas Holidays
· Pastor Randy's resignation & farewell
· Approving the 2015 Budget
· I shift roles to serving as Interim Pastor
· Lent, Holy Week & Easter
· Transition Task Force start-up, looking toward the Call Process for a new pastor

That's a lot of change we've been through a lot together. No wonder I felt weary!  So, I'm grateful to you for giving your pastor time off to recuperate and get ready for the next steps on our journey.

Now we're ready to share another round of significant events.  The Day of Pentecost falls on May 24.  Not only is that Memorial Day weekend, it also brings the Rite of Confirmation for Julia Kotvis and Avery Marlia.  Avery is Pastor Randy's grand-daughter. Pastor Randy and I will join together to confirm Avery and Julia, just as we did last October to confirm six other SOV teens.  So, I hope you'll attend our single worship service that day (10:00 a.m.) to support Julia and Avery as they're confirmed in the Christian faith.

We'll also have a single service (10:00 a.m.) on the two Sundays following Pentecost Sunday.  On May 31, we'll have a special "History of SOV" Town Hall meeting after worship.  Sponsored by the Transition Task Force, this meeting will help us build community by sharing SOV's story.  Many folks who have come in recent years don't know about the amazing things that have brought SOV from its humble beginnings to the present day.  By strengthening our congregation's sense of shared history we begin preparing ourselves for the process of calling a new pastor.

The Sunday after that, June 7, we'll have a Congregational Meeting after the single service (10:00 a.m.).  At that meeting we'll elect Church Council members.  We'll also review proposed updates to SOV's Constitution and vote on those proposed changes.

So please put those three Sundays on your calendar.  Please don't take a vacation from church until you've taken part in these three important special events!
