Pastor's Wednesday Message

I'm back from vacation, looking forward to the special presentation from the Building Committee coming up on Sunday between worship services. They're leading a Town Hall meeting at which we'll hear the story of "Building on Christ Our Foundation." That's the name of the campaign, or better, the dream, of expanding and upgrading Shepherd's physical plant. It's a dream conceived under the leadership of Pastor Kurt Rizer. This was in the early 2000s. For various reasons the project was put on hold several years ago. The money raised as part of that capital campaign is being kept safely until SOV is ready to dare to dream again of upgrading and expanding its ministry to the community through its building and grounds. Looks like that time may be soon.

Last month, SOV's Church Council authorized the Building Committee to renew its work on behalf of the congregation. This is a good thing. Last autumn, I facilitated a joint meeting of the Executive Committee and the Building Committee. We discussed the history and present status of "Building on Christ Our Foundation." We shared our thoughts and feelings about a number of issues pertaining to the stewardship of that project. The meeting was very fruitful. It laid the groundwork for this Town Hall meeting on Sunday. We'll hear the history of this project, but we will also hear about some surprising new opportunities God is sending our way. This Town Hall meeting is important. It deserves your full attention. You should come, listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and get ready to dare to dream.

It's no coincidence that this Town Hall meeting, new possibilities for the capital project, and the promise of a new pastor are happening all at once. God is doing something new, something good, at SOV. God is the primary actor here; we are God's witnesses and partners. Our most important work is to be alert and figure out what God is trying to accomplish among us. Then we have to discern how to respond faithfully and fruitfully. This summer will be a time of new opportunities and important decisions. So even if you're planning some vacation, don't just check out. Stay in touch and keep track of what God is getting ready to build — with you — at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.
