Pastor's Wednesday Message

This clear, cold weather has an upside: light!  I'm used to clouds and rain at this time of year.  But now, brilliant afternoon sunshine lights up my kitchen; the bamboo and incense cedar in the backyard radiate clarity I'm not accustomed to in our western Oregon winters.  I see the mountains as if they were my next door neighbors.  At night I can see starlight, and planets shining in the firmament.  These strike me with the power of religious visions.  Revealed as it is, the world touched by holiness.

This Sunday we celebrate Epiphany, the Church's festival of light.  The whole Epiphany season is filled with images of light in the scriptures, to go with stories about Jesus showing himself as the light of the world.  His light opens up clarity of religious vision for us.  We look for the light of Christ.  Sunshine helps us focus!  But even in darkness, the light of Christ still shines.

If you fret about the darkness this year may hold for you, and for all of us, look for the light of Christ.  God promises that the light of Christ will come and show us how to live.  Trust that promise.  Hold each other in kindness.  Help each other to stand, wait, watch.  The light of Christ will shine on us; when it does, we will see each other as we are — with the world around us — touched by holiness.

It's worth the wait.
