Pastor's Wednesday Message

The Great Thaw is finally here.  At last, life is back on track.  What a strange January this has been!  Seems like we've been trapped for a couple weeks in a weird fantasy world ruled by snow and ice.  I'm glad things will be getting back to normal.  You, too?  Tell you what, let's rendezvous at SOV on Sunday to celebrate our escape from the deep freeze with good worship and good company.  After two Sundays of cancelled services (!) worship will be a godsend.

Some of you may have been wondering whether Johnni Olson of the Union Gospel Mission showed up at SOV last Sunday only to find it closed.  Not to worry.  By Friday, Johnni and I had already rescheduled her presentation.  She'll join us this Sunday, January 22, at 10:00 a.m.  Johnni is the Director of Union Gospel Mission's "LifeChange for Women and their Children" program.  She will tell us about the program and help us see how we can create an ongoing partnership to support women and their kids as they transition from homelessness to a better life.  SOV has a chance to make a small but mighty contribution to solving this problem through partnering with UGM.  I hope you'll attend and prayerfully consider how you might support this effort.

Meanwhile, I'll be meeting with Pastor Tom Hiller tomorrow.  I will brief him about things we've been working on over the past three years.  Pastor Tom will be ready to lead Shepherd effectively from the time he assumes office on February 1.  I feel confident that he will serve SOV very well indeed over the next few months as the Call Committee moves forward in its process.  I should also say that I feel a lot of optimism about this next leg of the call process.  We've been through two slates of candidates but "third time's the charm," as the saying goes.  Call processes almost never run beyond three slates of candidates.  Keep on praying that this next set of interviews and meetings will bring just the right person to be SOV's new regularly called pastor.

Even though I'll soon be leaving Shepherd, you all will still be in my heart.  I look forward to our reunion this Sunday.  May God bless us and bring us safely to worship.
