Pastor's Wednesday Message

Dear friends,

A member of our church recently asked me about sanctuary churches, I shared with her the recent message from our Oregon Synod Bishop Dave Brauer-Rieke. I hope you find it helpful. Let me know of any comments or questions. - Pastor Tom

  • The Oregon Synod of the ELCA did, in fact, vote last May to be a "Sanctuary Synod." This means that we consider all our congregations to be safe and sacred spaces for all people. It does not mean, however, that all congregations have agreed to participate in the sanctuary movement.
  • As a "Sanctuary Synod" we in the Oregon Synod of the ELCA also challenge one another to study and learn about the needs and realities of our neighbor - be they immigrant, Muslim, Latino, handicapped or other.
  • We believe and teach that honoring the stranger and alien in our midst is a Scriptural command. It is a vital part of our Christian vocation.
  • We do not, and have not, actively encouraged congregations to break the law. At the same time we do respect, and will support the rights of our members and congregations to discern for themselves, what love and care for their neighbor looks like.
